Big Medicine-Little Medicine, was more than a cure or remedy. They were a bond with the supernatural world and were believed by some to have mysterious powers to protect them.

Coyote Crossing

Sitting Bull, in a vision, looked into the sky and saw soldiers falling like grasshoppers, with their heads down and their hats falling off. Because the white man had no ears and would not listen, The Great Spirit was giving these soldiers lives to the Indians

Custer's Last Nightmare

The White Man never fully understood what the white buffalo, "Dream Keeper", meant to the Indian - held in awe and reverence in every aspect of his life, his culture and his religion.

Dream Keeper

Every summer, after the long and hard winter, the clans and societies would gather in a favorite camping place to re-new old friendships, celebrate and give thanks. This tradition has been handed down generation to generation and known today as a Pow Wow.

Gathering

Carnivores, fire, flood and storms took their annual toll, but neither these nor Indian hunting appeared to reduce the number of buffalo appreciably on the Great Plains. The huge herds seemed indestructible before the coming of the white man.

It is said that a long time ago, before the white man, when the animals still spoke, that a woman with special healing talents was brought to the top of the world by the animals, each in turn. She received knowledge of Medicine from the emissary of the Great Spirit, the White Buffalo. This Buffalo Medicine was to be passed down generation to generation, for the good of all.

In most of the complex ceremonials, the buffalo was recognized as the life-giving gift of the higher powers. The mythology associated with the birth of a rare white buffalo epitomizes the revered animals mythology.

Stand Off

We have lived upon this land from days beyond history’s records, far past any living memory, deep into the time of myths and legends. The story of my people and the buffalo are one single story. We are always joined together.

Time Of Myths And Legends

The Creator took a turtle and covered its back in mud. The mud grew larger and larger and became a large island. The Creator then made first man and woman and led them around the edge of the island. Upon arriving at the starting place, the Creator planted corn and told man and woman to continue circling the island. Upon returning they found the corn growing nicely, and with each round the island grew bigger and the corn grew ripe and ready to eat. Finally, the island became the Earth and in this way the Creator gave the people their Earth home and their staple food, corn.
